The Ogun State Government has launched two groundbreaking initiatives to tackle plastic pollution and promote a circular economy in the state.

The “Plastic for Cash” and “Blue Box Programme” initiatives were unveiled by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, during the 2025 World Environment Day celebration held at the Olowu of Owu Palace in Abeokuta

Oresanya highlighted the critical importance of addressing plastic pollution, which has become a global crisis. He noted that Nigeria generates over 35 million metric tons of waste annually, with Ogun State contributing over 1.6 million tons. The commissioner emphasised that beating plastic pollution requires a lifestyle change, policy priority, and collective responsibility.

The First Lady of Ogun State, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, commended the Ministry of Environment for their efforts in safeguarding the environment and promoting sustainability.

She pledged her office’s full support for the Ministry’s initiatives. Oba Saka Matemilola, a traditional ruler, also urged everyone to turn waste into a business opportunity.

The Ogun State Government’s initiatives aim to mainstream waste-to-wealth, promote environmental responsibility, and drive climate-smart urban development. The government hopes that these initiatives will inspire behavioral change, create economic opportunities, and enhance recycling in the state.
